I was so incredibly honoured to be asked to share our story in the book, “Belonging for people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities”. It felt like such a special opportunity to honour my younger brother, Sessé, and our whole family, while also celebrating our heritage.
“Belonging” is a collection of really moving stories that show the strength, resilience, and joy of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and their families. It’s a book that really highlights the importance of inclusion and understanding. Many reviewers have commented on how powerful and important the stories are. For example, one review said the book is a testament to the power of human connection. Dr. Kjartan Skogly Kversøy from the Journal of Educational Thought said,
This book gives a glimpse into the lives of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. It is a reality of many obstacles and challenges. In contrast, the focus of this book is on the positive possibilities. The message is that if we are willing, people in this situation can have playful lives, agency, choices and feel the joy of belonging.
When I first opened the book and saw the page with our story, I felt so emotional. It was like a wave of memories came flooding back. Holding “Belonging” in my hands feels like holding a little piece of my memory with Sessé. It’s a way to keep our memories alive and share my love for him with others. I hope our story, and all the stories in this book, can help people see the beauty and value in everyone, no matter their abilities.
