The neurodiversity awareness cards set[1] consists of two main groups: a) the cognitive functions and b) the external aspects. For each function or aspect, a pair of cards represents two possible outcomes, one closer to the neurotypical expectations and the other closer to the neurodivergent expectation.
The neurodiversity cards are based on the cognitive functions that relate to how the autistic brain differs from the neurotypical. Each suit refers to a cognitive function as displayed in the table below.
Table 1: Neurodiversity cards: The four suits and their relation to cognitive functions |
Theory of mind | The mind reader | These cards encourage the young person to reflect on how they understand others and their ways of thinking. |
Executive functioning | The Link maker | Self-assessing executive functioning is complex, but these cards offer scenarios to help with that. |
The Multitasker | Multitasking in terms of executive functioning involves transitioning between tasks. These cards offer self-reflection on that. | |
The Contextualiser | Contextualising makes things relative and less rigid. These cards reflect on how the young person deals with context. |
