Meeting with Gill Clarke

[09 Jan 2007]

Present: GC & HV

Discussed the assignment for Data Collection.

GC suggested some readings, such as:

  • Handbook of Qualitative Research (Denzin & Lincoln)
  • An introduction to Qualitative Research Methods: The  Search for Meanings (Taylor & Bogdan)
  • Research Methods in Education (Cohen & Manion)
  • Real World Research (Robson)

She also suggested :

  • Compare quantitative x qualitative methods in terms of involvement with  the subject and/or political power to make changes
  • Introduction: tell the reader what I am going to do (brief description/explanation about methods)
  • Keep in mind the implications (theoretical/political)

[12 Jan 2007]

After talking to MN about the assignment and the meeting (Melanie lended me some books) I’ve decided to start by Denzin’s Handbook together with MN’s books, and try to include other authors just when/if I feel the need.

[14 Jan 2007]

At the present moment I’ve read some sections of Denzin’s Handbook, and some parts of other books, and selected the main topics which the assignment will cover.  I’ve made a first sketch for the first draft. tomorrow I am going to Uni to read, research, and type some bits, before session on the library.

Reflection

In the beginning I was scared by the complexity of this assignment and my need to finish it ahead schedule due to my last stage of pregnancy. For this reason I asked to meet GC. After meeting her, and especially after sharing my concerns with MN, and having her support, I am more confident and less desparate.
